Career Opportunities
Our Therapeutic Recreation/Gerontology program at Lethbridge Community College has the primary focus of facilitating independence among our aging population.  Students learn to work with active, frail and disabled elderly in a variety of settings.  A large component of our program allows close interaction with elderly clients the the fieldwork placement courses.  Fulfillment of this requirement may take place during the school year or the summer months of May, June, July or August.

Job Titles:  When looking for employment opportunities, employers may use the following names.

TRII - This person will require a four year degree or a two year diploma in the Therapeutic Recreation field or related areas.  Managerial skills and practical experience for supervision of TR staff, and planning, implimentation and evaluation of programs would be an asset.

TRI - A degree or diploma would be required.  This person provides assessment of slient needs leading to the development of a variety of programs:  treatment, leisure education and recreation.

TR Aide - a diplome, one year certificate, or past work experience is the usual requirement.  Implementation of social programs under the direction of a Therapist is needed.  Some agencies allow the aides to do all types of programs and activities except assessments.

Therapy Aide - A diploma, one year certificate or experience may be the requirement.  Generic responsibilities to a variety of professionals working in health care - speech, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, and recreational therapist.

Senior Staff Titles:
These people would be involved with supervision of staff as well as conducting client programs.

Junior/Regular Staff
These titles reflect persons who would be involved with direct client programs.
